Reflexology

What exactly is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a method for activating the healing powers of the body.  It is both old and new.  From ancient texts, illustrations and artefacts, we know that the early Chinese, Japanese, Indians and Egyptians worked on the feet to promote good health.  What joins the ancients with the moderns is the long established principle that there are energy zones that run through the body and reflex areas in the feet and hands that correspond to all the major organs, glands and body parts.
In early 20th century Dr William Fitzgerald developed the modern zone theory of the human body, arguing that parts of the body correspond to other parts and offering as proof the fact that applying pressure to one area anaesthetized a corresponding area.
In the 1930’s Eunice Ingham, a physiotherapist, used zone therapy in her work with patients.  She concluded that since the zones ran throughout the body and could be accessed anywhere, some areas might be more accessible and effective than others.  She was right.  The feet were the most responsive areas for working the zones because they were extremely sensitive.  Eventually she mapped the entire body onto the feet and so Reflexology was born.

Some of the Benefits of Reflexology

  • Reduces stress and induces deep relaxation thereby giving your body a much better chance of healing and coping.
  • Improves circulation.
  • Cleanses the body of toxins.
  • Helps to create homeostasis.
  • Revitalises energy.
  • Is preventative health care.
  • Can be useful in helping to alleviate the effects of some cancer treatments.
  • Can be used alongside conventional medicine and other therapies.

Please remember Reflexology is not a diagnostic therapy and the healing that may take place is on many levels individually or in tandem e.g. mentally, physically, emotionally or spiritually.

Reflexology is not intended to replace the advice of a trained health professional.  If you know or suspect that you have a health issue, you should consult your GP or Practice Nurse.  Reflexology does not replace conventional medicine but complements it by working alongside it where necessary.
